Be the Church Day 2018

Join us for worship at 8:30 am before we head out to serve as the hands and feet of Christ in our community and surrounding areas. T-shirts will be available in the FLC Lobby at 8:00 am.

We ask that every family/individual bring a case of water or small Gatorade-type drinks to be donated to the Free the Captives Fun Run on April 21.

Builders Without Borders of Texas – Food Ministry

Builders Without Borders of Texas is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing housing, education, and medical services to disadvantaged people locally and around the world. Last year, BWBT delivered 30,000 pounds of rice and beans to those in need, and we helped package 5,000 of those pounds last year at Be The Church day. Volunteers will package 6,000 pounds of bulk rice and beans into quart-size bags for distribution on our campus. Please allot 2 hours for this project. Family-friendly; no experience required.

Builders Without Borders of Texas – Eye Glass Ministry

Once a month, BWBT goes into elementary schools in the poorest areas of Mexico to do vision screenings and give eye glasses to children. BWBT is located at 5393 Wilson Road in Alvin. Last year, they supplied 1,000 pairs of eye glasses to those who would not have had the gift of vision otherwise. Volunteers will clean, sort, label, and package eye glasses. This project will take place at the BWBT facility in Alvin. Please allot 2 hours for this project. Family-friendly; no experience required.

Builders Without Borders of Texas – Painting the Bunkhouse

BWBT has built a facility to house volunteers from other parts of the country. They need help painting the bunkhouse. This project will take place at the BWBT facility in Alvin. Please allot several hours. 

Christian Helping Hands – Spruce Up The Grounds

CHH is a volunteer driven local food pantry that also provides emergency assistance for various needs. We have been long-time partners with CHH providing funding and countless hours of volunteer work. Volunteers will paint the fence surrounding the dumpster and will spruce up the area. Please allot two to three hours for this project. No experience needed; family-friendly. 

CJ Harris Elementary – Garden Construction

CJ Harris Elementary is located at 2314 Schleider Dr. in Pearland, and has students who are in grades Kindergarten-4th. We have been long-time supporters of CJ Harris from partnering as long-term mentors to providing goodie bags during STAAR Testing. Volunteers will complete a raised flower bed, tidy and lay soaker hoses, plant shrubs, make a bench, install a French drain and construct a small foundation in the garden area nestled in a nook behind the school. Volunteers should bring shovels, spades, tools and gloves. Please allot 3 hours for this project. Plant and flower donations welcome. Project Leader: David Baker

Keep Pearland Beautiful with Liana Hart Landscaping

Help beautify Hickory Slough Sportsplex with landscaping and garden clean up. Liana is heading up this project to earn her Girl Scout Gold award. Volunteers will be planting plants in the ground in an area at the park. The area is about 60’ by 15’. Please bring gloves and shovels. This project is appropriate for teens and adults.

City of Pearland Tree Planting

Volunteers will plant saplings for the City of Pearland Parks. 

Keep Pearland Beautiful – Trash Pick Up/Adopt a Highway

The mission of Keep Pearland Beautiful is to empower Pearland Citizens to take responsibility for their environment so that we may all live in a clean and beautiful city. Volunteers will pick up litter/trash on the road. Please allot 1 hour for this project. No experience necessary; this is a family-friendly project, but it does include a lot of walking along side the busy road.

FAM Houston

Fondren Apartment Ministry (a ministry of Westbury United Methodist Church) works for justice by building and empowering community among refugees and immigrants and local Houstonians through practices of hospitality, mutuality, storytelling, and inclusivity. This project will include a cookout for the residents and some small projects for their complex.

Free the Captives

Free the Captives is a faith-based anti-human trafficking 501(c)(3) non-profit that fights the exploitation and trafficking of Houston’s youth. They engage and mobilize the Christian community while partnering with non-profits, law enforcement, and government agencies in the fight against modern day slavery.)

**We need 800 bottles of water/canned soda brought on Sunday, 4/8.

The use of these drinks are for a 5K run benefitting the fight against human trafficking on April 21.

Forgotten Angels - Painting Residential/Dayhab Facility

Forgotten Angels is a non-profit organization providing exceptional care and support to individuals living with developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities. Residential care is provided in group homes as well as through a day habilitation program. Some of their services include caring for the residents, employment assistance, and keeping them engaged in the community and to help them reach their full potential. Volunteers will paint the interior of a residential group home. Please allot several hours for this project (there may be an opportunity for a follow-up service day). Experience is helpful though not required. Older children (7th grade and up) and adults only please.

Hope Village – Clean & Wash Transport Buses inside/out

The mission of Hope Village is to provide superior yet affordable residential and support services to those with intellectual, physical, or developmental disabilities. The campus includes residential homes on site, day programs, work skill activities, and a cafe where residents serve customers. Please allot two to three hours for this project; Family-friendly.

Hope Village – Tree Trimming

Volunteers will cut and prune the trees on the property. Please bring ladders, loppers, saws and other trimming equipment.

Houston Food Bank

Volunteers will sort and package food to be delivered/donated; Must arrive on location by 8:45am, and orientation will begin at 9am. The Houston Food Bank is located at 535 Portwall St., Houston, TX 77029.

Kidz Harbor – Cleaning, Landscaping, and BBQ Cook-out

Kidz Harbor is a Foster Care facility dedicated to providing a safe harbor for children caught in the storms of life such as neglect and/or abuse. Their mission is to provide the children with a safe, clean and nurturing environment. Volunteers will power-wash, clean, work in the garden, and cook/grill burgers and hot dogs for the residents. Please allot three hours. No experience needed; family-friendly.

Kidz Harbor – Rebuild and replace fence

Volunteers will rebuild the fence damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Please allot three hours. No experience needed.

Loaves and Fishes

Join the team to cook and serve dinner at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen in Downtown Houston. 4/14, 6/9, 8/11, 10/13, 12/8

Texas Annual Conference Harvey Rebuild

We are committed to be "Here for the long haul." We will work on construction projects such as putting up drywall and painting to help families rebuild their homes and their lives.

Wheelchair Ramp Build

Volunteers will build a wheelchair ramp for a homebound adult.

On Campus Projects at Pearland:

  • Assemble Goody Bags during STAAR Testing for CJ Harris and Rustic Oaks

  • Assemble Blessing Bags

  • Kairos and Kids (and kids at heart!)—This project is great for children of all ages and those who are a child at heart who love to color and draw. We will color/decorate placemats and gift bags that will be used at the next Kairos Retreat in June.

  • Assemble care packages for B.I.G. Love

  • Assemble Flood Buckets for UMCOR
